Hobby Center for the Performing Arts
Houston, Texas
Size:270,000 SF
Completed:2002
Architect:Morris Architects
The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts adds an element of architectural distinction to Houston's Theater District. This majestic facility houses state-of-the-art theatrical technology, and is capable of hosting complete Broadway productions. The $70 million facility houses a 2,650 seat main theater (Sarofim Hall) and an adjacent 300 seat (Zilker) smaller theater. In Sarofim Hall, the dome ceiling has 2000 imbedded fiber optic stars, giving the illusion of a summer evening. Theater planning and design consultants created an intimate theater, with the last row only 128 feet from the stage. Designed by architect Robert A. M. Stern, the facility has received rave international reviews, not only for its stunning design, but also for its level of acoustical achievement.
