The George R. Brown Hall at Rice University is a three story, 108,000 square foot research facility that contains 51,000 square feet of laboratory and support space for cell and developmental biology, biochemical and biomedical engineering, organic chemistry and biochemistry, as well as an animal facility and 14,000 square feet of administrative spaces. A laboratory planning module was developed to accommodate the various user needs and to promote long-term flexibility. Laboratories are modular in space planning design, with all labs having individual thermostat controls. The air distribution system maintains a constant negative air pressure in the laboratories, to prevent contaminated air from infiltrating into other areas.
