Library Service Center
Houston, Texas
Size:26,600 SF
Completed:2003
Architect:Kendall-Heaton
Owner:Rice University
The Library Service Center for Rice University is a permanent off-site storage facility for the university’s infrequently used books and rare documents. The 26,600 square foot, two level building is equipped with a specialized HVAC system designed to maintain the high bay storage area at 50° F and 30% relative humidity. The collection is protected from fire using an in-rack sprinkler system designed specifically for high density storage. Upon arrival at the site, books are cleaned and reconditioned before being digitally catalogued and efficiently stored by size. A semi-automated retrieval system is used to deliver books to the main campus upon request.
